There are several ways in which the humble potato, specifically a raw potato can be a natural acne remedy to try at home.
Raw potatoes have several active ingredients which help in the treatment of acne. Firstly potassium, a deficiency of which has been linked to acne. They also contain sulphur which has been used in acne treatment products for many years; the advantage of the raw potato is that the sulfur comes from a natural source. Raw potatoes also contain phosporus and chlorine, both of which have been linked to acne cures.
The emzymes in the pulp of the raw potato combined with its Vitamin C content and starch act as a natural food for the skin. The juices of a raw potato are alkaline in nature and this acts as a natural antiseptic and in addition the acidic portion of the pulp helps to remove the decaying and dead skin cells. The vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in the potato juice also make it antibacterial.
Using Raw Potatoes as a Natural Acne Remedy
Perhaps the simplest way to use raw potatoes as a natural acne remedy is simply to cut a potato in half and rub the cut side onto the affected areas of the skin. Rub gently for around 30 seconds, allow the potato juice to dry on the skin and wash off with warm water afterwards.
A more thorough method is to use the pulp of the potato as a poultice. Grate some raw potato and then grind this to a pulp using a mortar and pestle or something similar until it forms a wet mixture.
To use the raw potato poultice, spread the pulp over the skin like a mask and leave it for at least 30 minutes. You will probably find that it does not dry out completely.
As well as being a natural acne remedy, using raw potatoes in this way can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, and help to prevent the onset of boils, pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.
